Smithfield Mountain Bike Park

By far the most known and recognised of all Cairns Mountain Bike Parks, Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is located just a 20min drive from the Cairns international airport and CBD. Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is a riding destination that all core mountain bikers know as it is the highest profile rainforest trail system in world.

This iconic mountain bike park was Australia’s first world championship venue nearly 25 years ago and is home to the 2014 and 2016 UCI Mountain Bike World Cups and the 2017 World Mountain Bike and Trials Championships.

Unlike the other Cairns Mountain Bike Parks, Smithfield boasts spectacular rainforest Mountain Biking in with network of trails offering some of the most fun-filled climbs and descents in the country for mountain bike riders. Trails sculpted out of volcanic clay twist their way through magnificent vine-wrapped jungles. With names like Wobbegong, Flat Snake, Blue Marlin, Cuscus and Barramundi, many of these trails hug the jagged ridges overlooking the Great Barrier Reef. The park has 60km of trails including UCI level technical short and long climbs plus technical descents for advanced riders.

The Trails are all on dirt and loops can be added to create a ride of a few hours or a whole day. The gateway trails are an introduction to mountain biking so families can ride together to build confidence and develop skills. Trail markers line the trails with green for the easy trails, blue for intermediate and black and black diamond trails for the technical and advanced trails. Green trails include technical features that can be avoided, blue trails have technical features that cannot be avoided and black and black diamond trails include a lot of non-avoidable, technically-advanced.

Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park

Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park is a 40min drive from the Cairns international Airport and the smallest of the Cairns Mountain Bike Parks, but feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The natural trails following cow paths and 4wd roads have been tweaked slightly over time to make it mountain bike friendly, but there are no manufactured obstacles as the aim is for riders to simply enjoy their surroundings end explore the open scrub land.

The Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park network consists of a large “Gateway Loop” combining the Velodrome, Twin Gullies, the Powerline Trail, The Link, The Bone, and Sawmill Flats. Off these are a number of fingers: Balboa, McGrath’s Maize, Dingo Run and Youthful Yindin.

They are fast and flowing with no real technical challenges all linked by small fire road sections ,however riders will need a decent level of fitness to negotiate the climbs. There are six easy sections from 500m to 4km and four intermediate sections from 1km to 2km. Davies Creek also hosts some beautful swimming holes for a post-ride cool off, as well as quiet camping spots along the creek.
